Municipalities: 1.3 million euros for animal shelters

The Ministry of Agricultural Development has announced that it will provide municipalities with 1.3 million euros in order to establish shelters for stray animals.

The decision came after the Ministry of Agricultural Development’s consultation with the Ministries of Interior and Finances regarding the terms and conditions for the creation and funding of animal shelters.

The funds, which will derive from the regular budget, will go towards collecting, identifying and documenting stray animals, as well as providing inoculation, sterilization and healthcare services. The shelters will also assist in pet adoptions and reintegration.

The Minister of Agricultural Development Yannis Karasmanis, who signed the relevant ministerial decree, noted that the important initiative was towards the benefit of public health, as well as the health and welfare of pets.
