Wind in Kastelli blows lighter than in the morning and firemen are having the big fire in control, putting an end to people’s agony.
Ground-based and aerial firefighting forces operate in two major fronts of fire.
The fact that the wind is lighter helped them to control the fire.
The fire started about 6.30 am under unknown conditions.
49 firemen from Chania, Apokoronas and Kissamos, with 15 fire trucks, were trying to extinguish the fire.
Two firefighting helicopters (from Heraklion and Chania) also assisted by making water drops during daylight.
Authorities didn’t evacuate Livadia village, as it was considered in the morning.
Fire burns grassland and olive trees. Fire also burned two abandoned buildings and a warehouse.
According to Regional Fire Forces Commander of Crete, Dimitris Rapanakis, the fire was uncontrolled because of strong wind (9 Beaufort). “We will continue trying all night ling to extinguish the fire”, he mentioned.
Mr. Tassos Kouroupakis, Head of Civil Protection in Chania, mentioned that α key factor for controlling the fire was wind.
