Heavy penalties for Greek club following death of football fan

Greece’s football federation has imposed heavy penalties on a third division club whose supporters engaged in violent clashes resulting in one death last month.

EPO announced on Wednesday that Cretan club Irodotos would be given a 15-point penalty and its fans would be banned from attending the club’s next ten league games.

Irodotos will also not be allowed any player transfers this season and will have to pay a €2,500 fine.

The decision follows the death of 47-year-old Kostas Katsoulis due to severe head injuries suffered in clashes between Ethnikos Piraeus and Irodotos fans in the city of Heraklion on September 14.

Four men accused of badly beating the Ethnikos fan are facing multiple counts of attempted murder and serious bodily harm.
