Tourists flock to Crete
Crete is one of the destinations in Greece this year that achieved one of the highest growth rates of around 44%, attracting German tourists as acknowledged by Der Touristik, the second biggest tour operator in Germany.
Indeed, the firm, according to “Kathimerini,” sees great potential both for tourism noting that available rooms in hotels with which they cooperate, in Greece, have started already to dwindle for next June.
Der Touristik, with a turnover of over 4.6 billion euros annually held a presentation of their global travel program for the summer of 2015 in Crete.
The event, attended by two of the head of the Agency, Rene Cherzog and Rolf Dieter Maltzan. The presentation was held for the first time in Greece and was attended by representatives of the Greek National Tourism Organisation and Aegean airlines attended by 61 journalists from major media in Germany.
The top executives of the Agency found from this year’s results from tourism that “the restoration of Greece has been completed and succeeded.” The number of visitors to Greece, handled by the agency, increased by about 10% surpassing 160,000. But individual destinations achieved much higher figures such as Crete, the growth rate of which reached 44%.
Agency executives noted that the pace of bookings of Germans on holiday in Greece is already growing at a bold upward pace.
This makes them believe that unless something unexpected happens, the cessation of sales especially during peak periods will come earlier than ever for some destinations in Greece in 2015. Their estimate is that the number of tourists that the agency will handle towards Greece will increase back to double digit percentage rates. High demand, moreover, was the main reason that the Agency has decided to increase the availability of airline seats to Greece via Aegean.
At the same time, however, Der Touristik has an active interest for Greece in terms of extending collaborating hotels. This was the reason that Mr. Hassan Gigkit, head of Der Touristik Hotels and Investments, which is the hospitality arm of the group, was at this event.
