PHOTOS: Four people trapped in Omalos. Chaos in Chania due to strong winds and heavy rain. Emergency situation all over the Prefecture
Rain and snow stopped to fall all over Crete, but there are serious problems all over Chania Prefecture.
Four people (two young men and two young women) are trapped in Omalos and will spend the night in the church of Agii Theodori. Their health situation is good. They called at the Fire Service and firemen will try to rescue them on Friday morning.
But, what happened in the first night of the new year in Chania is unbelievable. The same situation also continued during the first day of the year.
Many cars were trapped on the National Road and on roads around the city of Chania (photos from Agia Marina and Nerokourou).
Drivers should very careful at the following places:
- Agia Marina
- Vamvakopoulo (at the junction)
- Mournies (at the junction)
- Petra Seli (Omalos)
- Limni (the road towards Deres is closed due to major damage)
- Kameno Seli
- Gerani (4 Bulgarians were evacuated by the Fire Service)
There was no electricity in many neighborhoods, due to continous lightnings, such as Akrotiri, Stalos, Livadia and Platanias.
Also, Kolimbari, Voukolies, Tavronitis and Kerameia.

Especially in Platanias and Kastelli, lots of hotels, shops, houses and basements, flooded.
Fire Service had many calls for pumping water from basements, houses and stores, while strong winds uprooted trees.
A stone wall fell in Agii Apostoli.
Due to strong winds, there was a prohibitive departure for ships from the Local Port Authorities (Souda/2821089240 – Heraklion/2813406900). According to new information, all ships from Crete depart on scheduled time.
There are also problems in some flights from Chania and Heraklion airports (“Giannis Daskalogiannis”/2821083800 – “Nikos Kazantzakis”/2810397129).
As announced by the Prefecture of Chania, anyone who has serious damage in his business, due to heavy rain, may proceed to an application of losses and damage.
All application forms will be taken from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. from January 2 to January 4 at the building of Chania Prefecture (Dikastirion Sq.).
Everyone else who wants to declare any other kind of damage should fill an application at the Municipality he lives on.
For the Municipality of Chania the address is Milonogianni & Ipsilanton.
Regional Governor of Crete Mr. Stavros Arnaoutakis visited areas of Chania with the biggest problems and damages from the heavy rain.
Vice Governor Mr. Apostolos Voulgarakis and the Mayor of Platanias Mr. Giannis Malandrakis asked from Mr. Arnaoutakis to declare the Prefecture of Chania in emergency situation.
