The Greek government is demanding the immediate transfer of all public agencies’ money in retail bank accounts to an account held in the country’s central bank.
In an “extremely urgent” decision by Alternate Finance Minister Dimitris Mardas, all public agencies holding accounts in retail banks, are ordered to transfer the moneyto a Bank of Greece amount and close their accounts. The number of accounts affected is 1,193.
Greece has to repay a €300 million loan installment to the IMF on June 5. Government ministers have been giving mixed signals as to whether they will, or can, repay the loan, but Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis said Tuesday the payment will be made because Greece will have reached a deal with its lenders by then.
