German tourism: +16% bookings in Rhodes in December, -5% in Heraklion

Rhodes airport traffic grew by 16% and entered the top ten ranking destinations, according to monthly figures from leading German holiday reservations provider Traveltainment while Heraklion on Crete suffered a 23% drop in November.

The same data indicate that Palma overtook Antalya to become the most booked destination airport for German package holidaymakers in December in the latest sign of a ‘Go West’ trend in the market.

The Majorcan airport saw a solid 10% rise in bookings last month as Germans opted for holidays on the Balearic island, and maintained its 24% share of all bookings for the ten largest destination airports, according to monthly figures from leading German holiday reservations provider Traveltainment.

The Canary Islands also performed well last month, with a strong 18% rise for Las Palmas, 9% for Fuerteventura, 11% for Arrecife and 5% for Tenerife South.

26% drop in Turkey

In contrast, Antalya, which had already slumped by 24% in November, suffered a 26% drop in bookings last month. As a result, the Turkish Riviera gateway’s market share declined three percentage points to 23%, leaving it second after having topped the ranking since the start of the year.

Similarly, Hurghada suffered a 29% drop in bookings in December following a 42% slump in November as demand for Egypt holidays faded away following the Sinai plane crash. The airport ranked fourth last month behind Fuerteventura.

The Portuguese island of Madeira maintained its ninth position despite a 21% fall in bookings compared to one year earlier.
