Daily Mail: Crete and Halkidiki among top 5 beach holidays

Crete and Halkidiki are among top 5 beach holidays according to Daily Mail.

The British newspaper describes the two renowned Greek destinations as follows:

Crete

The fifth largest island in the Mediterranean and Greece’s most southern, Crete has 650 miles of remarkably varied coastline with a backdrop of mountain ranges. In high summer temperatures can reach the baking high 30s, and even in spring and autumn it is warm enough to laze on the beach.

The Cretan people are renowned for their hospitality, so whether you choose one of the more popular east coast resorts, go to the less developed west, stay near the capital Heraklion or historic Rehthymnon on the long north coast, everywhere you go on your holiday to Crete you’ll get a warm welcome.

Away from the beach Crete holidays offer walking and mountain views. If you are feeling energetic you can hike down the beautiful Samaria Gorge to the sea. For a gentler way of exploring hop aboard the ‘road train’ from Panormos to the little villages in the foothills of the White Mountains. Discover the legendary home of the Minotaur in the archaeological site of Knossos and see its treasures in the recently restored Archaeology Museum of Heraklion.

Halkidiki

The three gnarled ‘fingers’ reaching into the Aegean sea from a fat palm on the mainline give Halkidiki a distinctive outline and mean the region can boast some of the longest stretches of coastline in Greece. With many white sand beaches backed by fragrant green pine forest and gently lapped by a turquoise sea, Halkadiki has great natural beauty.

You’ll also find traditional villages, holy Mount Athos, archaeology and modern resorts, making Halkidiki holidays a great choice.

Nea Moudania, a bustling fishing and resort town is the gateway to Kassandra is the westernmost peninsula, where some of the best accommodation can be found set in gardens leading to a long beach.

Ouranoupolis is an ancient city founded in the 4th Century BC, now a charming modern village at the neck of Athos, the eastern peninsula with peaceful resorts nearby.

Sithonia, the middle peninsula is rugged, favoured by lovers of the great outdoors, with inland walking trails, secluded coves, tiny fishing villages and fewer resort hotels.

The list of the top 5 beach holidays also includes Sardinia, Majorca and Croatia.
