Ankara Mayor Says Aegean Islands -Including Crete- Should Not Belong to Greece

Ankara Mayor İbrahim Melih Gökçek was the latest one to add a comment on Greece’s sovereignty of Aegean Sea islands, implying they should belong to Turkey.

After the provocative comments by Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the country’s foreign ministry, it was the turn of the Ankara mayor to challenge the 1923 Lausanne Treaty.

However, Gökçek took it a few leaps further when he twitted that all Aegean islands, even those a few miles from Athens, including distant Crete, were unfairly “lost” by Turkey.
