PM Tsirpas from Crete: If we give research room to breathe, we will do wonders!

Visiting the Institute of Technology and Research (ITE) at Heraklion, Crete on Thursday, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said he was impressed by the work and high-level science being done there.

“It is a pity that the majority of Greeks are not aware of ITE’s work. If we give research room to breathe, we will do wonders,” Tsipras underlined after a tour of the facility, while talking with young researchers who had returned to Greece after spending time abroad. In fact, he added, “I am proud that Greece has such high-level scientists and we need to give [them] space and breathing room to grow.”

The prime minister noted that all of Greek society was investing in knowledge, which was an important asset, and stressed that young scientists must be given incentives to return.
In reply to a researcher’s statement that ITE has a strong brand name, the prime minister said that most Greeks do not know what a brand name is and, for this reason, “we have to export research results and then reimport them for Greeks to trust them.”

Another issue arising is innovation and research, which is a government priority. For this reason, Tsipras will visit the Foundation for Research and Technology on Thursday, while on Friday he will address a forum on Clean Energy for the EU Islands in Chania.
