Trump says Greece has done a ‘terrific job of coming back’ from the crisis

Greece has “gone through a lot” and now must be assisted in its efforts to exit the crisis, U.S. President Donald Trump said in his address to Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras in their brief exchange in the Oval Office in front of the press.

“They’ve done a terrific job of coming back, they will be back. We’re working with them on many different things. They’re upgrading their fleets, their airplanes, the F-16 airplane which is a terrific plane. They’re doing big upgrades. We’re doing trade with Greece and we’re going to have some meetings right after this,” he said, adding the respective delegations will hold staff meetings and a working luncheon.

“We’ll be talking about additional ways where Greece will help us and we will help Greece,” he said. “We’ve had a long-term relationship with Greece, they’ve been great friends and loyal friends and allies and we look forward to our discussion today. Thank you Mr. Prime Minister.”

On his side, Tsipras thanked the president for the invitation saying it is an important moment for the strategic cooperation between the two countries.

“I am sure that we will have very fruitful discussion today. I think that it is a very important moment for our strategic cooperation and I am sure that we?ll do whatever it takes to enhance this cooperation,” he told Trump.

“Greece is a very strategic partner in a very sensitive region. But every time has been a very reliable partner of the United States. We share common values-don’t forget that the values of freedom and democracy which we share were born in Greece-so I’m very happy to be here, it’s an honour for me,” he added.

Talks between the two leaders are expected to cover a wide range of issues including defense cooperation, economic investment, regional developments and energy.
