There is a very high risk of fires starting (level four on a scale of five) in several areas of Greece on Saturday, based on a map issued by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection (www.civilprotection.gr) on Friday.
Among these are Attica, the Northern Aegean Region (Lesvos, Chios, Samos, Ikaria), the Southern Aegean Region (Cyclades), Central Greece Region (Viotia, Evia, Skyros) and the Peloponnese Region (Corinth, Argolis).
Level 4 alert areas are shown in orange on the map, while high risk areas are yellow.
The secretariat has warned all the relevant state services to be on heightened alert in case of fires and has advised the public to be particularly cautious and avoid actions that could accidentally start a fire, such as burning fields, garden waste, using machinery that creates sparks (rotary saws, welding etc), lighting open-air BBQs and dropping lit cigarettes.
In case of fire, the public are advised to call the emergency number 199 to alert the fire brigade.
Advice on personal protection during forest fires are given on the civil protection agency website.
