Searching for Suzanne! U.S. Biologist has gone missing in Chania
U.S. biologist Dr. Suzanne Eaton has gone missing in northwest Crete, where she was attending a conference at the Orthodox Academy of Crete. Suzanne was last known to be playing piano on Tuesday, and is believed to have gone on a run between 15:00 and 17:00. All of her belongings remain in her room: passport, wallet, phone, cash, cycling shoes. Her running shoes are missing from the room.
Due to the rough terrain and extreme heat, we believe the most likely possibility is that Suzanne may have either become overheated and looked for shade or that she may have fallen. We need as many volunteers as possible to help check ravines, trail edges, and under brush and shady areas.
If anyone reading this lives in the area, especially between Afrata and Kolymari, we urgently ask you to join in the search on foot. With such a large area to cover, every set of eyes is needed. If you have a security camera in that area, PLEASE review the footage from the afternoon and evening of July 2. If you are a property owner, please walk your property! THANK YOU!
URGENT NEED: We have been told that the Greek government needs to request a team of tracking dogs from Germany, which has been offered by the German government but will not be supplied without a formal request. We are also in need of a helicopter equipped with infrared cameras to search the dense brush for signs of heat, which the Greek government also needs to formally request from the US Naval base before they are allowed to intervene.
The U.S. Embassy is aware of the above, but does not know who in the Greek government needs to make the request. If you can help illuminate this process, please get in touch with us ASAP at email@example.com.
More info below:
Suzanne runs nearly every day fo 30 minutes, and ran the previous day at the same time. Contrary to some reports, we are unaware of anybody actually seeing her leave for a run; we do not know what clothes she was wearing or where she might have headed. We have heard reports say she was seen with a swimsuit, but we do not believe she brought a swimsuit to Crete. If you have anything to do with this report, please contact us immediately!
Suzanne is a U.S. citizen, a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, a molecular biologist at the Max Planck Institute in Dresden, Germany, the beloved mother of two sons, and wife of British scientist Dr. Tony Hyman. Her family, including sister, brother-in-law, and niece and nephew, are all in Crete searching high and low.
Thank you for all of your kind suggestions and questions. We are so grateful to the Greek response teams and all 70 members of the conference who have aided in the search, and to everyone who has helped share this story in hopes of finding lead.
Love and gratitutde,
