Cretan naval blockade of NATO base in Souda

The destruction of the Syrian chemicals off Crete has many Cretans worried of the environmental consequences.

The Pentagon announced that a US naval crew has begun work to “neutralise” Syria’s chemical weapons on a vessel in the Mediterranean, in what is seen as an unprecedented operation expected to take about two months.

A number of organisations in Crete have set up a coordinating committee opposing the American-led operation.

According to local news media they are planning to block the NATO naval base in Souda, near Chania, western Crete.

They say that by blocking Souda, support vessels to the chemical destruction operation will not be able to sail.

In addition, ordinary fishermen are planning a protest at sea to highlight the dangers of the destruction of chemicals in the Mediterranean.
