Cretan diet… the secret of longevity?

Scientists are looking for the secret of longevity of Cretans.

According to a survey, entitled “The Seven Countries Study”, by the Center for Genetics, Nutrition and Health, Cretans are competing for the longest life expectancy in the western world.

Cretan diet is full of antioxidants, Omega -3 and Omega -6 fatty acids.

As Mrs. Artemis Simopoulou (president of the Center for Genetics, Nutrition and Health) mentioned, during an event of Amway Company, “The Seven Countries Survey” focused on the relationship between diet and cardiovascular disease, on the presence of fatty acids in the diet.

Survey showed that deaths from coronary heart disease in Greece, Japan and Italy, are at lower levels compared to other countries.

However, the average cholesterol in the population of Crete was close to other Mediterranean areas, a fact that led scientists to search even more for the elements Cretan diet that give longer life expectancy.

They found out that the antioxidants Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids are the main factors.
