PHOTOS: Asi Gonia - The blessing of the herds on St. George’s Day

Asi Gonia is located southeast of the municipality of Apokoronas.

Asi Gonia is connected with the blessing of the herds on St. George’s Day, a unique custom in Crete.

The shepherds of the region consider their patron St. George, flocking with their flocks in the church of St. George Galatas (Milkman).

The animals, adorned with the most melodic “leria” corralled outside the church and milked one to one.

Then the flock is blessed by the priest.

The milk is distributed to residents in plastic bottles from village girls dressed in traditional costumes.

This custom is very old and nobody can say exactly when it starts.
