Greek FinMin calls for European solidarity

A catalytical move is required, on a European level, which will offer a strong injection of liquidity into national and European economies, Greek Finance Minister Christos Staikouras said in an article published in Greek daily newspaper “Kathimerini” on Tuesday, ahead of a Eurogroup meeting the same day.

He called for the issuance of a common European security which will finance – probably through a solidarity fund – the needs generated by dealing with the health crisis and preparations for a post-pandemic recovery in the framework of a wider road map, while also revitalising confidence among European citizens in the vision of European integration.

The Greek minister said that, on a pan-European level, the real economy and its productive fabric have far greater needs as a result of the health crisis than the measures taken so far. He noted that more powerful weapons needed to be pulled out in this battle, in the framework of real solidarity, adding that Tuesday’s Eurogroup meeting needs to rise to the occasion and make decisions based on the values of solidarity, and avoid seeming timid and hesitant.
